Corporate Social Responsibility

At Mercers Solicitors we take our corporate responsibility seriously and have proactive policies towards our employees, clients, the wider community and the environment.

Our Planet

As a firm we have taken several positive steps to ensure that we are not only environmentally sustainable for now, but for the future.

We have taken steps to ensure that we are more environmentally friendly and this has included some of the following:

  • Sourcing our electricity from 100% renewable sources
  • Installing energy efficient light bulbs in every room in our office
  • Stopping the purchase of plastic milk bottles, instead using glass bottles
  • Switching to bamboo-based toilet and kitchen roll in the office
  • Switching to Ecover cleaning sprays
  • Switching to a B Corp certified supplier for our office supplies
  • Encouraging a paper free office, with files stored electronically
  • Minimising unnecessary staff travel with online training and meeting facilities

We have become members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance, giving us access to tools and resources to reduce our Carbon Footprint and to become more environmentally aware. In 2022 we reduced our carbon footprint by more than 40% and we will strive to do more for our planet.

Our environmental policy is reviewed each year, and we are constantly looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly.

Our Community

Having been a part of the local community for nearly 200 years, it is important that we continue to support local causes and have a positive impact on those around us.

Aside of our close work with local Charities, we continue to support community events and strive to support both our clients and employees with causes that are important to them.

Henley & District Agricultural Association

Each year we are delighted to support the Henley & District Agricultural Association with the much-loved Henley Show and Ploughing match. We get involved at the Henely Show by awarding the Mercers’ trophy to a worthy winner in the horse showjumping class.

Henley Royal Regatta

Each year we get involved with the Royal Henley Regatta, embracing those that come to Henley-on-Thames to celebrate all things rowing! Not forgetting the importance of giving back to our team, we enjoy a day by the river and often a boat trip!

Townlands Memorial Hospital

In summer 2023, the firm donated a number of new benches to the local Townlands Memorial Hospital in Henley-on-Thames. The firm was commended for its donation, and employees attended the unveiling of the new benches, enjoying a slice of cake with Mary Berry.

Oxfordshire Young Farmers

We were pleased to support the Oxfordshire Young Farmers with the annual County Show, taking place in Henley-on-Thames. Employees got involved by taking part in judging, attending the event and assisting with the much-needed funding.

Mercers’ Charity Partner for 2024 is Thames Hospice.

Our Charity Partner for 2023 was the Chiltern Centre. The Chiltern Centre is a purpose-built care home offering a range of services to young people with learning difficulties that empower them to live life to the full.

The Chiltern Centre was founded in 2004 as a registered charity for disabled children, initially set up by parents and supporters of local children with disabilities. For many years these services provided valuable respite to the families of children and young people with disabilities locally.

In September 2023 several of members of our team completed a Thames Path walk and you can read more about it here. With more fundraising to follow, keep an eye out for our next event!

Our Charity Partner for the year 2021 was the Charlie Waller Trust. We raised £4,500 for the Trust, based in Berkshire, which was set up by Sir Mark and Lady Waller, in memory of their son Charlie, who sadly took his own life whilst suffering from depression.

Senior Partner, Peter Hopkins, completed the London Marathon in 2018, raising over £3,000 for the local Sue Ryder hospice. In the past we have supported a wide variety of different charities, hosting fundraising events to raise money. Some of these charities included Guide Dogs For The Blind, Cancer Research, Hearing Dogs For The Deaf and the British Heart Foundation.
